Christchurch: City Hotels and Accommodation
The largest number of hotels can be found in Christchurch city centre, approximately 12 km / 7 miles south-east of Christchurch International Airport (CHC). Accommodation in the city is scattered around the following districts.
Christchurch City Centre
The true hub of the city, much of life in Christchurch is centred around Cathedral Square, home to the famous and extremely eye-catching Christ Church Cathedral. The majority of the city's accommodation is located within just 10 minutes of Cathedral Square, including many quality hotels and budget options - particularly around Latimer Square. Smaller, more homely guest houses and other accommodation is situated on the eastern side of central Christchurch, with further hotels close to the magnificent Botanical Gardens. The city contains over 100 motels, many of which lie on the northern side of the city centre, along Bealey Avenue, and close to Hagely Park, to the west.
North of Cathedral Square
Hotels to the north of Cathedral Square have the advantage of being near to a number of impressive shopping districts and top eateries. Close to both New Regent Street and Victoria Square, many of the most desirable hotels in this part of Christchurch are located alongside the Avon River and the Convention Centre.
South of Cathedral Square
Those looking for accommodation south of Cathedral Square will be close to a number of popular attractions, such as the Addington Raceway, a noteworthy horse track regularly hosting many seasonal races. Hotels can be found throughout the nearby suburbs of Addington, Cashmere, Huntsbury, Lyttelton and Mount Vernon Park.
East of Cathedral Square
Many people choose to stay in hotels on the eastern side of Cathedral Square to be within easy reach of the imposing Jade Stadium, which hosts numerous important sporting events and outdoor celebrations throughout the year. Additional accommodation is located further east, close to the New Brighton shoreline.
West of Cathedral Square
With highlights on the western side of Cathedral Square including the sprawling University of Canterbury campus, hotels here tend to offer excellent value for money. West of Cathedral Square is known for being a lively part of Christchurch, containing a number of colourful bars and clubs. Accommodation is also close to the Riccarton Shopping Centre and the city's train station.
